"Cadets, as you know, is not the military, and one of the aspects that makes it a civilian organization is the unique relationship that exists between the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Air Cadet League of Canada. These two organizations put their efforts together to operate and assist 440 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadrons in Canada. Their responsibilities are different but they work together to complement each other."1

Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces

The Department of National Defence is a major partner in implementing the Air Cadet program and is the main government body that works together with the Air Cadet League to support the air cadet program.

In general, "The Department of National Defence/Canadian Forces provides funding for the Cadet Program, including cadet uniforms, instructors, training and travel costs.""The Canadian Forces (CF) is responsible for training, supply, administration and organization of the squadron.  More specifically, DND provides uniforms for cadets and some transportation, such as buses, to go on survival exercises. DND also provides facilities for summer camps and reviewing officers for annual inspections. Training of Cadet Instructors Cadre officers from the squadron staff is also conducted and provided by DND."1

Air Cadet League

The Air Cadet League of Canada is a major partner in implementing the Air Cadet program and it is a civilian, non-profit organization that works together with the Department of National Defence to support the air cadet program.

"The Air Cadet league is the supervisory body for all local sponsors who provide facilities and storage space to the cadet corps and squadrons. Local sponsors, who form the local level of the leagues work in partnership with cadet corps and squadron staffs.  The majority of league members are volunteers who donate their time to the Cadet Program.  Most work directly at the community level with the cadet corps and squadrons in areas such as fundraising and cadet recruiting."3

"The League is responsible for public relations with the community; providing training equipment, transportation and facilities not supplied by the CF; providing financial support as required; and for the administration of the local sponsor."1

The Rotary Club has received the Top Sponsor Award from the Alberta Provincial Committee during it's tenure with 395 Squadron.

"Sponsoring Committees work in partnership with cadet corps and squadron staff to ensure the viability of the unit.  Their support is intended to complement the resources available from the Canadian Forces.  The responsibility for the sponsoring committees falls to the Air Cadet League - as their Supervisory Sponsor."3

417 Squadron

"Certain cadet corps and squadrons have Affiliated Units which may be Regular or Reserve Force units. The affiliated units name a liaison officer for the cadet corps or squadron and also provides, where possible, support towards the achievement of the cadet corps or squadron's goals."2

For many years 395 has been affiliated with 417 Combat Support Squadron based in Cold Lake, Alberta.  417 Squadron flies the CH-146 "Griffon" helicopter and this is the reason that 395 Sqaudron is referred to as "Griffon" Squadron.  Through this affiliation, members of 395 and 417 Squadron share a squadron crest as well as a coin that symbolizes membership in "The Ancient and Loyal Order of the Griffon" and recognizes dedication to their respective unit for a specific period of time.  Through this affiliation, cadets are able to take part in many exciting activities including periodic opportunities to have familiarization flights in the CH-146 Griffon helicopter.

"[417's] roles are essentially a carry-over from its past Base Flight days: search and rescue (SAR), medevacs and Cold Lake Air Weapons Range maintenance support.  417 Squadron's helicopters are being deployed more often to participate in national SAR operations since the integration in 1994 of four Search and Rescue technicians. One full crew and helicopter are on standby 24 hours a day."4
