Optional Training Optional training is a way of enhancing one's cadet experience. Optional training takes place throughout the year at different times and locations. See below for more information and be sure to listen to announcements for details. The 395/504 band trains on Monday evenings between 6:30 and
9:00pm at the Alberta Aviation Museum Hangar, Drill Teams Both compulsory and precision drill teams train most Saturday afternoons between October and April, concluding with a zone-wide drill competition on Sunday 25 April 2010. The compulsory drill team is open to all members of 395 Squadron and the precision drill team is designed for more senior cadets. Training begins will begin in October. Basketball & Volleyball Teams Both basketball and volleyball teams train most Saturday afternoons between November and April, concluding with a zone-wide drill competition on Saturday 24 April, 2010. 395 Squadron has both senior (14 and up) and junior teams (under 14) train and compete in each sport. Cadets are reminded that participating in a team sport activity is a requirement for completing most training levels. Mostly, however, it is about being active and having fun! Training begins will begin in October. Karate Club The Karate Club trains on most Saturday mornings between November and May. The club is open to all members of 395 Squadron. Training begins will begin in October. Survivair Team Survivair is a province-wide competition of wilderness survival skills that takes place during the May long weekend (21-22 May, 2010). The 395 Squadron team will be training throughout the year on many topics including first aid, shelter and fire construction and map and compass. Marksmanship Team Marksmanship training takes place at various times throughout the year. The zone competition is scheduled for Feb. 27, 2010. Effective Speaking Effective speaking is a good way to learn public speaking and speech writing skills as well as boost the confidence and leadership abilities of a cadet. The effective speaking competition is usually scheduled for April or May 2010, details still pending. Duke of Edinburgh Award Program The D of E award program is an international youth award program that recognizes attributes of learning, community service and outdoor activity. For more information, visit the International D of E site. The squadron helps cadets track their progress through the D of E program and, at times, organizes activities that can count towards the D of E awards. Ground School Ground school is intended for level 3 cadets and up that are applying for either the Glider Pilot Scholarship or Power Pilot Scholarship. Training is each Sunday afternoon from 1pm to 4pm at the Alberta Aviation Museum. The DND qualification exam for the scholarships is scheduled for Saturday 9 January 2010. Training will begin in September.
